Squarespace Blogging Tips: How To Create Posts That Rank On Google Page 1

Two places you might currently be in that I can 100% relate to:

  1. Just starting out and wondering how to get anyone to find your blog posts (besides your always supportive aunt)
    or

  2. Been blogging for months/years and cannot seem to crack the code of how blog posts EVER find their way to Google Page 2, 3, or 4, let alone PAGE 1!?!?

I know. It can be really frustrating. And it can feel like there’s some secret club you just aren’t a part of, and will never be, no matter how hard you try.

Well, this isn’t exactly true.

It is true that if you keep doing what you’re doing, that is— blogging with no real strategy or understanding of SEO, then your posts might never see good rankings. That’s very possible.

But, it’s also true that you can learn what to do, then do it, and see results. Eventually, this new knowledge starts to snowball and you’ll get to a point where when you click SAVE+PUBLISH on a blog post, you know that in a few months that post will be on Google Page 1.

Yes, really. Yes, you.

So let me provide some pointers to get you off the track you’re on and firmly planted on a new, brighter, more clear path.

Blogging Tips For Getting Your Squarespace blog posts to Google Page 1:

Know the keyword you’re targeting for each post

Each blog post should have a specific keyword it’s targeting.

What do I mean by keyword? A keyword is any word or phrase (usually phrase) that people are typing into Google to yield results.

So is happiness a keyword? Likely not. Because no one is really typing just that into Google.

But happiness quotes, happiness articles, and what is happiness in life are keywords people are typing into Google.

For example, with this article you’re reading right now, I’m targeting the keyword squarespace blogging tips which is a popular Squarespace-related search on Google.

Understanding keywords is absolutely vital to good SEO. In fact, SEO isn’t possible without really keyword research as this is the very foundation of SEO.

I have an article on this topic here: Squarespace SEO: Understanding Keywords but my Squarespace SEO Expert Course goes into DEPTH about what keywords are, how to pinpoint them for your site, and how to strategically implement them throughout your site to grow your audience. In fact, there’s a whole section on Blogging for SEO.

Use the keyword in your URL

URLs are prime SEO real estate. In fact, I think page titles and URLs are two of the most important factors for SEO, if not the most important.

So be sure to optimize your blog post URL with the target keyword before publishing, like so:

Include the keyword in your title and headings

Make sure to use the keyword in your blog post title, but also in the headings you use to format throughout your post.

Headings don’t carry as much weight as titles do, though. So if you can’t figure out creative ways to use the keyword in the headings, don’t fret.

Optimize images used in the post

When uploading images inside the post, be sure to optimize in three main ways:

  1. Resize before uploading to the site. Images should be no larger than 1500px on the longest edge (unless being used a banner image, then longest edge can be 2500px).

  2. Rename images using the filename field once the image has been uploaded to your blog post. Simply go into the filename field and enter either your blog post title or just the keyword itself.

  3. Caption each image with the target keyword for the post, as well. Then, select Do Not Display Caption. This allows the keyword to be stored in your sitemap (which communicates with search engine robots) but isn’t visible to your visitors.

Submit blog posts to Google Search Console right after publishing

Search Console updates Google right away that you’ve made updates to your site—in this case, a whole new blog post—so that it can get indexed ASAP rather than waiting for it to happen naturally which could take days or weeks.

I write in this article how to go about doing this, and I go into more detail in my Squarespace SEO Expert Course.

These are my most important tips for good SEO blogging practices. Feel free to leave questions or feedback in the comments section below. I’m happy to help!
