As a wedding planner, your website is a cornerstone of your business.
When a couple is preparing to get married, they’ll find the service providers they plan to hire one of two ways most likely: 1.) word of mouth, and 2.) Google searches.
To grow and maintain your wedding planning business, you need to not only have a compelling website, but you also need that website to rank on Google page 1 for the searches your target clientele will be typing into Google.
In this article, I’m going to offer advice and considerations for both, and I’ll be showing you the GORGEOUS website of a professional wedding planner in New Orleans for inspiration and reference.
Let’s jump in!
Advice & considerations when creating a website for your wedding planning business
High-quality imagery
A wedding is one of the paramount events in a persons life.
Many people envision their wedding from a very young age, so imagery is everything. This is why it’s so crucial as a wedding planner that you use compelling high-quality photos all throughout your website.
Fortunately, where there’s a wedding planner there’s usually a professional photographer, too! So be sure to connect with the photographer(s) of each wedding and ask them how you can arrange to get the edited image files of the event. Also ask them if they grant permission for the photos to be used on your website (and don’t forget to give credit to the photographers somewhere on your site!).
Homepage Design
A strong homepage is important in any website design.
Sometimes people will land on your website from a page other than the homepage—so you need all pages to be well-designed— but I’ve noticed throughout my career when looking at the analytics of a website that it’s usually the HOME page that has the most traffic.
So our homepage needs to be informative and impactful using strong imagery, strong phrases and text content, and strategic call-to-actions to be sure we guide visitors throughout the site and don’t leave them hanging so they end up leaving the site altogether.
This is one of * the * main reasons I recommend people hire a professional web designer- an amateur might be able to put a pretty website together using nice colors and lovely photos, but we also have to take into account the psychology of our users, and most professional web designers understand creative ways to do this.
Here are two examples of strong homepages—
Displaying your portfolio
After the homepage, the next most important part of a professional wedding planner’s website is the portfolio.
Once a person is engaged—due to your stunning and effective homepage design!— they’re probably going to want to see your work next!
For this, you need a beautiful portfolio page that showcases your best work. The portfolio page I designed for wedding planner Mary Spera is a 10/10 if you ask me— elegant, classic, clean, with a touch of color. Each image can be clicked on to take you to the page specifically for that event. I think it’s the best way to setup a wedding planner portfolio!
You can always just present a simple gallery page of images, but I think it’s more impactful to bring the visitor into the story of each wedding.
Outlining your services
After the homepage and the portfolio page, most likely the visitor to your site will now be ready to see your prices and packages. They’re going to want to know what it costs to work with you and what that price includes.
For this, you need a strong page outlining your services.
The Importance of Good SEO
You’ve probably heard at least little sound bites here and there about SEO, but I do want to stress how important it is, especially in this industry.
The online wedding service provider industry is pretty saturated, so how are you going to get your website noticed amidst the sea of other professionals?
The answer is that you won’t without a good SEO strategy -and- SEO built into the very framework of your website as it’s being designed.
This is crucial if you’re serious about building a wedding planning business that is successful in the long-term.
To make sure SEO gets done right, I recommend one of the following approaches:
Take my Squarespace SEO Expert course before designing/launching your new website (investment: $267)
ORHire a designer who is also a proven SEO specialist to design your website (cost of my web design + SEO package starts at $3,600)
If you’re hesitant about spending the money right now, I would strongly suggest saving the amount and doing it right instead of just getting a website out there for immediate gratification.
