Website Design For Interior Designers: Considerations + Planning

As a modern-day interior designer, your website is a cornerstone of your business.

Anytime a person is looking for the right interior designer for them, they’ll likely find them one of two ways: 1.) word of mouth, or 2.) Google searches.

To grow and maintain your interior design business, you need to not only have a compelling website, but you also need that website to rank on Google page 1 for the searches your target clientele will be typing into Google.

In this article, I’m going to offer advice and considerations for both, and I’ll be showing you the GORGEOUS website of a professional interior designer in Connecticut for inspiration and reference.

Let’s jump in!

Advice & considerations when creating a website for your interior design business

High-quality imagery

A person’s home is their sanctuary, it’s where they bring those closest to them, and it’s a reflection of who they are and what they value. What we see around us in our personal abode day in and day out impacts our state of mind in profound ways, and it affects how we show up in the world.

This is why it’s so crucial as an interior designer that you use compelling high-quality photos all throughout your website. Those images are going to create an impression as soon as someone lands on your website.

Big sweeping photos of different interiors are key, so that you can connect with varying personal aesthetics.

Be sure to connect with professional photographers after each completed project- those images are a huge investment into the growth of your interior design business.

See how I used large photos of various interiors on the main landing page of my client, interior designer Caroline Kopp.

A strong portfolio

When searching for an interior designer to work with, what do we want to see right away?

The work they’ve done in other homes!

For this reason, your portfolio should be a highlight of your website, a major focus.

A big gallery page of photos is okay, but it’s best to highlight each individual project on its own so that the viewer gets a sense of the atmosphere and story of that home.

See here how I created separate distinct pages for each of Caroline Kopp’s interior design projects, rather than just one big page of photos.

a strong services page

As service providers, we want people to get in touch with us. We want to talk, to forge that connection.

But… most people want to spend some time on your website first, they need time to think and consider, and they’d rather get the information they need from your website rather than have to reach out to you right away.

Good web design anticipates what visitors will want to see, and what they will want to know.

When it comes to an interior designer’s website, your users are going to want to know the exact services (packages) you offer, and how much you charge.

While you may prefer to generate custom quotes for potential clients, you still need to provide as much information about your services as possible.

Let visitors know exactly what you do, what it’s like to worth with you, what to expect from the process. Put yourself in their shoes. What would you want to know?! Then include that on your SERVICES page.

See here how we outlined the exact steps of working with interior designer Caroline Kopp, so potential clients know exactly how she orchestrates her projects and can decide ahead of time if that resonates with their personality or not. At the bottom of the page is a call-to-action button encouraging people to get in touch to begin discussing their interior design project with her.

Inform, then engage.

The Importance of Good SEO

You’ve probably heard at least little sound bites here and there about SEO, but I do want to stress how important it is, especially in this industry.

The online interior design service provider industry is pretty saturated, so how are you going to get your website noticed amidst the sea of other professionals?

The answer is that you won’t without a good SEO strategy -and- SEO built into the very framework of your website as it’s being designed.

This is crucial if you’re serious about building an interior design business that is successful in the long-term.

** My client, Caroline Kopp, is ranking organically at the top of Google for many of her target keywords that her target audience is searching, such as ‘connecticut interior designer’ and ‘interior designers fairfield county ct’ and many others. This has played a large role in sustaining and growing her business. **

To make sure SEO gets done right, I recommend one of the following approaches:

If you’re hesitant about spending the money right now, I would strongly suggest saving the amount and doing it right instead of just getting a website out there for immediate gratification.
